A Global Positioning System or GPS can be found in navigation devices and Smartphones, which can provide you with area maps and directions. When you purchase a GPS capable device you have to configure the settings for your personal use. The directions below will help you set up GPS on your Smartphone and your car’s navigational device.

1. Setting up your car GPS system

Your car’s GPS device comes with maps that have been pre - installed by the manufacturer. These maps have to be updated once in awhile to make sure you have the latest maps. You can add more maps of areas that are not covered by the GPS device in your car.

If you are using the GPS system for the first time you can upload new maps or updated maps by purchasing data cards with maps of the area you want to add. You can easily install the card in the slot in your GPS device.

Another way is to upload map image files from your computer to the GPS device. You can download maps from the internet and modify them to however you want to view the map. You can use the various image formats like bitmap and jpeg, although using bitmap will take up less space. Find space on your car’s dashboard and position the GPS device in place. Turn on the GPS device and configure the settings. On some devices the settings are easy to configure. To start off, you need to indicate your starting point and then input the address you want to go to. The data you input will be sent to the satellite and then sent back to the GPS device so the device will take a minute or two to display directions. 

 

2. GPS on Windows Mobile

Most Smart phones use the Microsoft Windows Mobile Operating System to provide more functions on a cellular phone. A GPS system can be configured to be used by various applications on the Smartphone. You just need to assign a port on the phone that programs will access GPS data from.

Go to the Windows icon and select Settings then choose System. Select the GPS Manager and then Program. You might have to try a few options for the port before you get the right one. Refer to your Smartphone’s manual for the suggested port. The port option GPD1 will work on most Smartphones so you can try that option first. Select the Hardware tab and choose the Internal GPS Device. From there, locate the Access tab and then place a mark on the Manage GPS Programs Automatically to enable GPS to be accessed by various programs on the Smartphone.

On some GPS devices the settings are easily configured just by indicating location points, on others, further configurations are made to specify port options.
